AOSS studies cover a range of disciplines that answer the demand for scientists and engineers with a broad knowledge of the many earth-ocean-atmosphere system processes.

AOSS programs focus on the description and explanation of phenomena in the atmosphere and oceans of the Earth; the exploration of planets and other solar system bodies; and the study of the heliosphere (the sphere of influence of the Sun) as a single system.

AOSS students have an extensive background in atmospheric and space science and in the engineering of complex and highly reliable space systems and instrumentation because of the integrated nature of the program.

As an AOSS graduate student you will be working with and learning from men and women who are among the world leaders in many areas of atmospheric and space sciences — as it has been for more than five decades.

Our atmospheric scientists are solving problems related to short- and long-term forecasting, air quality, atmospheric turbulence and convection, biogeochemical cycling, and precipitation processes, among a growing list of areas. The focus of planetary/space scientists includes the affects of space weather on Earth, planetary atmospheric and geological environments, and the construction of satellite-platform instruments for observation of the earth-atmosphere-ocean system.

AOSS offers high quality academic programs that combine extensive hands-on experience at all levels with a strong emphasis on the theoretical and applied aspects your area of concentration.

AOSS Research Activities

AOSS faculty and students describe and explain phenomena in the atmospheres of the sun, Earth, planets and the space in-between. The world of AOSS faculty includes space science and engineering projects on Earth, Mars, Saturn, Mercury and a comet. And it can be your world, too, as an AOSS student.

Focusing on developing models to describe and predict hazardous conditions in space weather

High Resolution Doppler Imager (HRDI)

On board NASA's Upper Atmospheric Research Satellite as part of the effort to study Earth's atmosphere

Remote Sensing Group

Develops microwave sensors, calibration methodologies and geophysical retrieval inversion algorithms for remote sensing of the Earth's environment from orbiting platforms

Solar & Heliospheric Research Group

Studying, both experimentally and theoretically, all aspects of the Sun's atmosphere

TIMED Doppler Interferometer (TIDI)

Investigating the dynamics and energetics of the Earth's mesosphere and lower-thermosphere
