Stratospheric Flight Testing of Mars Balloons
Dr. Jeffery Hall, senior engineer, JPL works on a variety of technology development and mission planning efforts. ABSTRACT: The exploration of Mars could be significantly enhanced through use of balloons that carry scientific payloads. Such vehicles could fly for thousands of kilometers over the course of multi-day or multi-week missions, providing unprecedented measurements of the atmosphere and near surface regions. This talk will describe NASA efforts to develop the technology required to fly balloons at Mars, with particular emphasis on the problem of aerial deployment and inflation of the balloon upon arrival at the planet. This work has featured a series of stratospheric balloon flight tests on Earth, and the talk will include photographs and movies from those experiments.
